The University of Texas at San Antonio, also referred to as simply UTSA, is a state university located in San Antonio, which is the seat of Bexar County, in the US state of Texas, with a population estimated at a number of more than 1 million inhabitants, fact which makes it the the 2nd largest city in the state and the seventh-largest city in the United States. San Antonio is the center of Tejano culture and Texas tourism, and was named for the Portuguese St. Anthony. It is part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan area, which, in 2008, had more than 2 million people, living within its limits, fact which makes it the 28th-largest metropolitan area in the U.S and third in Texas.
UTSA was founded by Governor Preston Smith, in June, 1969, and it was established one year later, the institution beginning with 5 colleges: Fine and Applied Arts, Business, Multidisciplinary Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Mathematics. Today, UTSA has 8 colleges, through which it offers its students, who number approximately 29 000, in total, 132 undergraduate and graduate programs in different fields of study, including 64 bachelor's, 47 master's, and 21 doctoral degree programs.
Athletics
The athletic teams at the University of Texas at San Antonio are known as the UTSA Roadrunners, who compete in 16 sports in NCAA Division I, including in golf, basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball. The men's basketball team is the most popular sport at the university, perhaps, because of the fact that the team has qualified for the NCAA tournament three times, in 1988, 1999 and 2004, representing, maybe, the university's most notable achievements. The women's basketball team has also contributed to UTSA's athletic fame, qualifying for the 2008 Women's NCAA Tournament, along with the softball team, which won the university's first Southland Conference tournament in 2004, the baseball team, which won the Southland Conference tournament in 1994 and 2004, and the men's track team and women's track team, which won the 1997 and 1996 cross-country championships, respectively.
